Historical script (chữ Nôm / Hán)
Before the Latin alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) became standard, một could be written as 𰰝, 𠬠, 殳, 𠬛. Today Vietnamese is written only in the Latin alphabet.
Usage note: một
một means "one", and it changes form in some numbers — a frequent stumbling block.
- 1 = một; 11 = mười một (always một after mười)
- 21 = hai mươi mốt; 31 = ba mươi mốt; 91 = chín mươi mốt
- 101 = một trăm linh một (North) / một trăm lẻ một (South)
The rule: after mươi (the tens from 20 up), "one" becomes mốt. After mười (exactly ten), it stays một.
As an article, một = "a, an": một cái bánh mì — a baguette. Vietnamese use it less than English uses "a": Tôi là giáo viên. — I'm a teacher (no một needed).
Useful phrases: một chút — a little; một mình — alone; cùng một — the same; thứ nhất = first (ordinal, not thứ một).
