Usage note: được
được is one of the hardest small words for learners, because its meaning depends on where it stands.
- After a verb = can, be able to: Tôi nói được tiếng Việt. — I can speak Vietnamese. Anh ăn cay được không? — Can you eat spicy food?
- Before a verb = get to, be allowed to (something good): Tôi được nghỉ hai ngày. — I get two days off.
- Passive, pleasant: Cô ấy được khen. — She was praised. (see bị for the unpleasant passive)
- OK, fine: Được! — OK! Được không? — Is that OK?
- To obtain, win: được giải — win a prize
Negative: không … được = cannot: Tôi không ngủ được. — I can't sleep. And không được + verb = must not: Không được hút thuốc. — No smoking.
Compare the two "can" words: có thể (possibility, before the verb) and được (ability or permission, after the verb). They often combine: Tôi có thể đi được.
Survival phrase: Bớt được không? — Can you knock the price down?
Etymology
Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 得 (“to get, to obtain”, SV: đắc).
