Historical script (chữ Nôm / Hán)

Before the Latin alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) became standard, ngàn could be written as 彦, 𠦳, 𡶨, 岸. Today Vietnamese is written only in the Latin alphabet.

Usage note: ngàn

ngàn is the Southern (and often poetic) word for "thousand"; the standard/Northern word is nghìn.

  • Năm chục ngàn nha chị. — Fifty thousand, please. (Saigon market)
  • hai ngàn năm — two thousand years

Both are correct and understood everywhere. Written texts and banks prefer nghìn; songs and literature use ngàn for "countless": ngàn năm — a thousand years (forever), ngàn lời cảm ơn — a thousand thanks.

Price shorthand: k works in both regions (50k).

ngàn also means "forest, mountain range" in old literature: núi ngàn.

Etymology

See nghìn.
