Historical script (chữ Nôm / Hán)
Before the Latin alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) became standard, nghìn could be written as 𠦳. Today Vietnamese is written only in the Latin alphabet.
Usage note: nghìn
nghìn means "thousand" (standard and Northern); the South says ngàn.
- một nghìn — 1,000; mười nghìn — 10,000; một trăm nghìn — 100,000
- hai nghìn không trăm hai mươi lăm — 2025
With Vietnamese prices, nghìn is constantly in use: Ba mươi nghìn một bát. — 30 thousand a bowl. People also write and say k: 30k (ba mươi ca).
Market speech often drops nghìn entirely when the amount is obvious: Bao nhiêu? — Năm mươi. — How much? — Fifty (thousand). Ba chục (literally "three tens") also means 30,000 dong in casual speech.
Big numbers group by thousands as in English: trăm nghìn (hundred thousand), triệu (million), tỷ (billion). Ten thousand is mười nghìn, not a separate word.
nghìn rưỡi = 1,500.
