Before the Latin alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) became standard, lăm could be written as 𠄻. Today Vietnamese is written only in the Latin alphabet.

Usage note: lăm

lăm is the form "five" takes after a tens number: 15, 25, 35… 95.

  • mười lăm — 15
  • hai mươi lăm — 25; bốn mươi lăm — 45
  • mười lăm phút — fifteen minutes / a quarter of an hour

In Northern speech, after mươi you will often hear nhăm: hai mươi nhăm, or the short form hai nhăm (25).

It does not apply after linh/lẻ: 105 = một trăm linh năm, not linh lăm. And 5 alone is always năm.

✗ mười năm for 15 — that means "ten years" → ✓ mười lăm. This is a good example of why the rule matters: the wrong form is a real phrase with another meaning.

Time: ba giờ mười lăm — 3:15; bốn giờ kém mười lăm — quarter to four (North).

Etymology

Alteration of năm (“five”) after mười (“ten”) (realized as mươi due to tonal shift when fused with a preceding syllable; compare bao nhiêu), which historically derives from Proto-Vietic *maːl, whence also Muong mườl. The historically final /l/ in mười/mươi causes the initial /n/ of năm to assimilate to /l/, producing mười lăm, hai mươi lăm, ba mươi lăm, ..., and chín mươi lăm. Compare Korean 월남 (wollam) with similar sound change.
