Before the Latin alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) became standard, xuống could be written as 𠖈, 𡬈, 𨑜, 𪧍. Today Vietnamese is written only in the Latin alphabet.

Usage note: xuống

xuống means "to go down", and it is also how you say "get off" a vehicle.

  • Go down: xuống tầng một — go down to the ground floor
  • Get off: Cho em xuống ở đây. — Let me off here, please. (to a driver)
  • Decrease: Giá xuống rồi. — The price has dropped. Giảm xuống — reduce
  • Toward lowlands or the coast: xuống Cần Thơ, xuống miền Tây (from Saigon to the Mekong Delta)

After a verb: ngồi xuống — sit down; nằm xuống — lie down; bỏ xuống — put down.

The sentence Cho em xuống ở đây (or Dừng ở đây — stop here) is essential on taxis and motorbike rides.
