Meanings of với chả in English

Preposition

  1. connects two ideas, or two syllables of a word for one idea, and emphasizes that that idea or those ideas have no bearing on the current situation, and therefore that idea or those ideas are to be dismissed out of hand
    • Con với chẳng cái, có giúp được mẹ tí gì đâu !Why the hell did I even give birth to you? You're no use to me whatsoever!
    • Quà với chẳng cáp ! Anh em mình với nhau mà !Why'd you bother buying me gifts? We're bosom buddies!

Etymology

với (“and”) + chẳng (“not”). As a literal phrase, the meaning is quite obvious in such construction as A với chẳng A (literally “A and not A”), but it becomes idiomatic in such construction as A với chẳng B (literally “A and not B”), where B is directly related to A in a way that makes them virtually synonymous. In many cases, với chẳng is shortened back to với, making them synonymous. This shortened với can be used in A với không A to convey the literal meaning.
