Usage note: thế nào

thế nào means "how, in what way, what is it like", mostly in the North; the South prefers như thế nào, ra sao or simply sao.

  • Anh thấy Hà Nội thế nào? — What do you think of Hanoi?
  • Món này ăn thế nào? — How do you eat this dish?
  • Dạo này thế nào? — How have you been?

Note that "What do you think?" is literally "How do you feel/see?": Anh thấy thế nào?, not Anh nghĩ gì? (which asks what thought is in your head).

Other patterns:

  • thế nào cũng = surely, no matter what: Mai thế nào cũng mưa. — It's bound to rain tomorrow.
  • không biết thế nào = don't know how/what: Tôi không biết nói thế nào. — I don't know how to put it.
