Usage note: mốt
mốt is the form "one" takes after mươi, and it also means "the day after tomorrow" (South) and "fashion".
- Numbers: 21 hai mươi mốt, 41 bốn mươi mốt, 81 tám mươi mốt. Not after mười: 11 is mười một.
- Shortened tens: hai mốt = 21, ba mốt = 31 in casual speech; trăm mốt = 110 (a hundred and one-ten).
- Day after tomorrow (South): ngày mốt; Northern ngày kia. Mai hoặc mốt em gọi. — I'll call tomorrow or the day after.
- Fashion (from French mode): đúng mốt — in fashion; lỗi mốt — out of fashion.
Note the trap with trăm mốt: it means 110, not 101. Similarly nghìn mốt = 1,100 and triệu mốt = 1.1 million. For 101 say một trăm linh một / lẻ một.
See một for the full rule.
Etymology
