Historical script (chữ Nôm / Hán)
Before the Latin alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) became standard, dù could be written as 𢂎, 𠱋, 油. Today Vietnamese is written only in the Latin alphabet.
Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *duː (“shelter”). There are related words in many neighbouring languages. Compare Lao ຍູ (nyū) (as in ຄັນຍູ (khan nyū)) and Khmer យូ (yuu) (as in តាំងយូ (tangyuu)). The distribution within both Tai languages and Austroasiatic does not indicate great time depth, so they might be borrowed from Vietnamese instead.
