Historical script (chữ Nôm / Hán)
Before the Latin alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) became standard, còn could be written as 群, 羣, 𱻉. Today Vietnamese is written only in the Latin alphabet.
Etymology
From Proto-Mon-Khmer *gɔn (“stable, enduring”) (Shorto 2006, #1131). Cognate with Mon ဂန် (kòn, “to be original, primal”), Parauk kɔn ("still"). Note similarities in form and meaning to Khmer គង់ (kŭəng, “to be durable”), though the velar nasal final consonant in the Khmer does not match.
