Etymology
Attested as Northern Middle Vietnamese blang (“moon”) in Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651), from Proto-Vietic *b-laŋ (“moon”). This is the Central-Southern form, now also the most common written form. See giai for the sound changes.
