Historical script (chữ Nôm / Hán)
Before the Latin alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) became standard, sánh could be written as 并, 並, 𤯭, 𡖼. Today Vietnamese is written only in the Latin alphabet.
Etymology
Attested in Phật thuyết đại báo phụ mẫu ân trọng kinh (佛說大報父母恩重經) as 阿並 (MC 'a bengX) (modern SV: a tịnh) and 并, a simplified form of 並 (MC bengX) (modern SV: tịnh). 並 (“to be side by side”) was used possibly because of its rime and its semantic closeness to sánh ("to compare"), as ‹s-› /ʂ ~ s/ is not known to come from /*b-/ (see Shimizu, 2015 & 2018).
