Historical script (chữ Nôm / Hán)

Before the Latin alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) became standard, nhớ could be written as 汝, 女, 𢖵, 𪡑. Today Vietnamese is written only in the Latin alphabet.

nhớ means both "to remember" and "to miss (someone)".

  • Remind: Nhớ khóa cửa nhé. — Don't forget to lock the door.
  • Miss: Em nhớ anh. — I miss you. nhớ nhà — homesick

Context sorts out the meaning: Tôi nhớ Hà Nội can mean "I remember Hanoi" or "I miss Hanoi", but with emotional words around it, "miss" is the usual reading.

Nhớ at the start of an instruction is a gentle reminder: Nhớ mang áo mưa. — Remember to bring a raincoat.

Opposite: quên (forget). Không nhớ = I don't remember; nhớ ra rồi = now I remember.

trí nhớ = memory (the faculty); kỷ niệm = a memory (an event remembered).
