Historical script (chữ Nôm / Hán)

Before the Latin alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) became standard, người ta could be written as 㝵些, 𠊛些. Today Vietnamese is written only in the Latin alphabet.

Usage note: người ta

người ta literally means "people", and it is the Vietnamese way to say "they" in the vague sense — "people say", "they say".

  • Người ta nói món này ngon lắm. — People say this dish is really good.
  • Ở đây người ta không ăn sáng sớm vậy đâu. — Around here people don't eat breakfast that early.
  • Đừng làm phiền người ta. — Don't bother them / other people.

It also covers "someone" when the identity does not matter: Người ta gọi anh kìa. — Someone's calling you.

A playful use: a person, often a girl in a sulky or flirty mood, may call herself người ta: Người ta giận rồi đấy! — I'm upset now, you know! This is cute and indirect, not literal.

Do not confuse it with ta alone, which is a literary or self-talk "I/we", or with họ, which points to a specific group.

Etymology

người (“person”) + ta (“I; we”). The various senses are semantically equivalent to Mandarin 人家, Cantonese 人哋 (jan⁴ dei⁶).
