Nominalized from mười (“ten”), due to the practice of combining single numerals with the decade numeral mười to form decade numerals other than mười itself. The tonal shift was triggered by the preceding numeral and is now fossilized. Compare bao nhiêu (“how many”) (← nhiều), the dialectal bao lăm (“how many”) (← lắm), the obsolete bao dai (“how long”) (← dài), and nước miếng (“mouth fluid; saliva”) (← miệng).
