Meanings of kẹo cu đơ in English
Noun
- kind of candy made from a mixture of peanuts, sliced ginger and glutinous rice malt syrup, served between two pieces of rice crackers.
Etymology
The creator, Đinh Vy, used to sell these candies to locals for two coins. He was therefore nicknamed "Cu Hai" (with Hai meaning two). Some French officers, who often visited to buy the candy, translated the latter part of the name into the French word "Deux" (which reads "đơ" in Vietnamese). This new latter part stuck around and gave rise to the name "Cu Đơ", replacing the original "Cu Hai".
