Historical script (chữ Nôm / Hán)

Before the Latin alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) became standard, gọi could be written as 噲, 哙. Today Vietnamese is written only in the Latin alphabet.

Usage note: gọi

gọi means "to call" — a person, a phone, a taxi — and also "to order" food.

  • Phone: Tôi sẽ gọi cho anh. — I'll call you.
  • Name: Cái này tiếng Việt gọi là gì? — What's this called in Vietnamese?
  • Order: Anh gọi món chưa? — Have you ordered?
  • Summon: gọi taxi — call a taxi; gọi xe — book a ride

Also used for address terms: Tôi nên gọi chị là gì? — What should I call you? — a very useful question, since Vietnamese "you" depends on the relationship.

In the South, kêu often replaces gọi: kêu món, kêu xe, kêu cơm.

cuộc gọi nhỡ = missed call; gọi video = video call.
