Meanings of dớp in English

Noun

  1. bad luck due to repeated failures beforehand

Historical script (chữ Nôm / Hán)

Before the Latin alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) became standard, dớp could be written as 葉. Today Vietnamese is written only in the Latin alphabet.

Etymology

Doublet of nhớp. The ‹nh-› vs. ‹d-› correspondence can also be seen in pairs such as nhện vs. dện, nhím vs. dím, nhừ vs. dừ, etc. Unlike those pairs however, which are pretty much synonymous, this term seems to have undergone a semantical development from "dirty" > "bad luck".
