Historical script (chữ Nôm / Hán)
Before the Latin alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) became standard, chiếc could be written as 隻. Today Vietnamese is written only in the Latin alphabet.
Usage note: chiếc
chiếc is a classifier for individual objects, much like cái, but more specific and slightly more refined. It is especially common with:
- Vehicles: một chiếc xe máy — a motorbike; chiếc máy bay — the plane
- Clothing and accessories: chiếc áo dài, chiếc nhẫn (ring)
- One item of a pair: một chiếc giày — one shoe; một chiếc đũa — one chopstick
Compare: một đôi giày = a pair of shoes, but một chiếc giày = a single shoe. If you lost one shoe, you need chiếc: Tôi mất một chiếc giày.
In speech, cái and chiếc often swap for ordinary objects (cái áo / chiếc áo), but writers, songs and ads prefer chiếc because it sounds more elegant.
Tip: if what you are counting is something you ride, wear, or hold in a pair, try chiếc.
Etymology
Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 隻 (“classifier; single, alone”, SV: chích). Possibly doublet of chách.
