Historical script (chữ Nôm / Hán)

Before the Latin alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) became standard, đấy could be written as 帝, 啼, 蒂, 帶. Today Vietnamese is written only in the Latin alphabet.

Usage note: đấy

đấy means "there, that", and at the end of a sentence it adds emphasis or softens a question. It is typically Northern; the Southern equivalent is đó.

  • Question softener: Anh đi đâu đấy? — Where are you off to?
  • Emphasis: Ngon đấy! — It's good, you know! Cẩn thận đấy! — Be careful, mind!
  • Pointing: Cái đấy của ai? — Whose is that?

Without đấy, Anh đi đâu? can sound like an interrogation; with it, the question is friendly small talk.

On the phone: Alô, ai đấy? — Hello, who's this?

Pairs to know: đây (here, this — near me), đấy / đó (there, that — near you or already mentioned), kia (over there — far from both).
